Window air conditioning units can be an eyesore. During the hot days of summer, they can provide critical relief from the heat, but this relief often comes with the cost of an obstructed view and the loud noise of its mechanical inner system.
Google recently patented a bladeless air conditioning unit that can provide silent cooling at a fraction of the cost of running a window unit. The design is similar to Dyson’s bladeless air conditioner, but could be much less expensive than the Dyson product once it hits the market. This air conditioning system could be the next addition to Google’s line of smart home products.
How Does it Work?
Google’s new design features evaporator loops, which are closed-loop thermosyphons that alter the ambient temperature by controlling the flow of electrical energy through the device. It will feature Peltier-based cooling, which is the use of an electrified junction to warm or cool the current moving through the device’s conductors. The Peltier effect is a specific use of the more general thermoelectric effect, which is the conversion of electric voltage to altered temperatures and vice versa.
Will It be Efficient and Cost Effective?
From its design, it appears that Google’s new device will use less electricity than the current air conditioners available, which means it will be less expensive for homeowners to run. It also aims to have a tighter seal in windows, which can help homeowners keep their energy costs down by eliminating the loss of heat through the gaps between the device and its window.
Dyson already proved that fanless air conditioners can be efficient and attractive with its bladeless fans, which it released in 2014. These units are 75 percent quieter than the air conditioners that use blades to cool their surroundings.
We do not yet know when, if ever, the Google bladeless air conditioner will reach the market or how much it will cost. Right now, all we can do is speculate about its price range and popularity with homeowners in the future. It is not the first time Google has created an innovative new product for the home. Currently, its Google Home and Nest products allow homeowners to control their homes’ temperatures, detect smoke and CO2, and keep a close eye on their interior and exterior spaces with a connected, simple interface.
