Air ducts circulate all the air in your home five or six times a day if the HVAC system runs regularly. But it might not be just air that’s pumping out of the vents. Your ducts could be polluted with dust or mold. If you notice dust blowing from the air grilles, or a dark layer of grime accumulating on the vents, we recommend cleaning the air ducts.
Unless you’re a professional HVAC technician, you probably don’t have all the tools that a professional uses to clean the air ducts. That’s okay. With a brush and a vacuum, you can clean the visible portions of your duct system, which may be enough to solve minor problems.
How to Clean the Air Ducts in Your Home
Before you put on your spring-cleaning outfit, take a moment to assess your ventilation system. You can remove an air grille plate and place a camera down into the duct. Turn the flash on and take pictures of the areas you can’t see or reach. If the pictures show a relatively clean air duct, then a DIY air duct cleaning project might be all you need. However, if you see mold or grime beyond what you can reach, contact our team of HVAC technicians to receive assistance with your project.
Follow these steps at home for any minor cleanups:
1. Gather a vacuum (heavy-duty if you have one), a cleaning brush, and a screwdriver.
3. The next step to cleaning the air ducts is to utilize a screwdriver to remove the air duct covers or grilles from the walls. Clean them with the brush. Soap and water work well too if you need to break through major dust and dirt.
4. Use the vacuum’s hose attachment when cleaning the air ducts. Clean as much of the air ducts as you can. This is where a heavy-duty vacuum comes in handy: standard vacuums aren’t usually powerful enough to remove dirt and mold in the tiny crevices of the duct. Reach as far as your arm and the hose will go.
5. For the grilles up in your ceiling, try wiping off the dust with a broom. Be careful—if you haven’t cleaned them for a long time, you could be in for a dust-and-debris shower. Goggles and a dust mask will keep everything out of your eyes and mouth.
