What are surges?
Surges, also known as transient surges or spikes, are momentary increases in ordinary household voltage. They occur more than 2,000 times a year in the average home.

Surges can be generated externally and internally. Lightning storms may create high-energy electrical surges that can enter your home and destroy your valuable equipment. Utility power station switching can generate fluctuations in line voltage. Home appliances such as furnaces, air conditioners, washers, and dryers can also generate surges that travel back to the breaker panel and throughout your home.

Are surge strips enough?
Intermatic recommends two-tier surge protection: hardwired and point-of-use devices. Strips are designed to work at the point of use and are excellent plug-in protection for appliances and small electronics. They protect equipment from surges that originate inside the building and do not pass through the breaker panel. Yet, they only protect equipment that is plugged into the strip. How does PanelGuard work?
PanelGuard protects all of the circuits connected to your breaker panel. It senses the increase in voltage produced by a surge and diverts the energy to ground, away from the circuits and away from your appliances and home electronics.

PanelGuard responds to surges in nanoseconds and handles maximum surge currents up to 48,000 amps. With its six-mode protection, it offers redundant parallel protection modes when installed on main panels. When installed on subpanels, PanelGuard provides all-mode protection.

PanelGuard is easily installed by your electrician and is available at an affordable price. It can be installed as an upgrade in new construction or as additional protection when adding a home office or upgrading your electrical service.
