This Old Heating System
Home heating systems have come a long way from what they used in homes of the past. Your home today can have a heating system that controls the temperature of each room in your home. Most modern homes rely on a central furnace that runs on natural gas and uses an electric blower motor to push air through vents to all the rooms in your home. There are programmable thermostats that allow you to program temperature changes throughout the day and week. With all of these improvements come energy savings and more money that can remain in your bank account.
The Heating Systems of Yesteryear
- The Fireplace: Though not as popular, fireplaces are still around. Before the revolutionary war, a main fireplace in the home was the only way you could add heat to your home. Before cool weather came, you would have to make certain you had a large stockpile of wood. Cutting the wood down to sizeable chunks would have taken a considerable amount of your time. You would also have to babysit the fire all periodically throughout the night to make certain it kept burning. Modern fireplaces use natural gas or electricity. Wood burning stoves are still popular today in many homes as a secondary heating source.
- Steam Radiators: You can still find steam radiators in old homes. They use a network of pipes to pump steam into large radiators that heat up the home. You would have a central boiler that would heat up hot water or turn water into steam. After World War 2, upgrades were made to the radiator system and oil was used to heat the water in a central boiler. If you have ever lived in house heated with old steam radiators, you know how loud they can be.
- Radiant Heat: Another popular home heating system that arrived on the market after World War 2 was radiant heating. When concrete was poured for slab on grade housing, metal tubing was installed into the floor. Hot water could then be pumped through the pipes and heat the entire floor. This provided an encompassing heat which was different from the point source heating systems of fireplaces and radiators. It wasn’t long before problems began to arise. The metal in the concrete would corrode and it was extremely expensive to replace the floor of your entire home. Recent improvements to this system have made it return as a viable heating system in modern homes.
